App Review Tue: Apps for RED

This Tuesday's app review isn't just a single app, it's a whole group of apps. Apple is doing something pretty incredible this year to support the Product Red. What is Product Red?

(RED) was founded in 2006 by Bono and Bobby Shriver to get businesses and people involved in the fight against AIDS.

In more than 30 years, AIDS - which is preventable and treatable - has killed 39 million people. Today, of the 35 million people in the world living with HIV, nearly 13 million have access to life-saving treatment that costs as little as 40 cents a day. While this is incredible progress, we've still got a lot of work to do to ensure that all those who need medication have access to it.

(RED) was created to help provide a sustainable flow of money from the private sector to fight AIDS. We’ve raised over $275 million to date through the sale of (RED) products from iconic companies - like Apple and Starbucks – and from (RED) events. And 100% of that money goes to work on the ground.

Apple has been supporting Product Red for many years, but this year Apple is taking a different approach...they are involving app developers. A substantial number of iOS developers have created exclusive Product Red content as In App Purchases for their apps. 100% of the proceeds of these in App Purchases go to Product Red. Some developers have also added some Product Red content to the main app and for those apps 100% of the proceeds from purchasing the app itself goes to Product Red.

Mac Daily News has a list of all the App Store Apps that are currently participating in the promotion.

I am really impressed with both the number of developers participating AND the content they are offering. These aren't just token give-aways, these In App Purchases are substantial content and they are only available for a limited time. I highly recommend you check out the list of apps in the Mac Daily News article or Apple's Product Red Page. If you own any of these apps, purchase the In App Purchases while you can. The promotion ends December 7th. After December 7th these special In App Purchases will no longer be available. Even if you don't own any of these apps, considering buying a few and supporting this great cause.

Here are a few of the apps and In App Purchases I purchased:

  1. Monument Valley: Monument Valley, a beautiful puzzle game for iOS has an exclusive set of levels developed in the theme of Product Red. It is a $0.99 In App Purchase for a special Product Red themed chapter to the game called "Ida's (RED) Dream". The standard app, which is not free also counts towards Product Red. This is a terrific app, absolutely gorgeous!

  2. Minon Rush: Minion Rush is a free game, but they are offering several In App Purchases that are Product Red themed like:

    • Lifeguard Costumed Character (gives you special abilities in the game)
    • Token Pack (lets you buy content/abilities for the game)
    • Prize Pod (every pod gives you a surprise gift that can used within the game)
  3. Star Walk: Star Walk is an augmented reality star gazing app. Point your iOS device towards the sky and it will help you identify and learn about objects in the night sky. There is a special In App Purchase called the "RED Planet" that gives you a detailed hi-res map of Mars plus details on the geography, internal structure and 3-D models of spacecraft in orbit or on the surface of Mars. Both the standard app (which is not free) and the "Red Planet" In App Purchase count toward the Product Red Promotion.

  4. Garage Band for iOS: Is not a free app and both the original purchase price of the app and the $0.99 In App Purchase of the "Garage Band RED Loop Pack" counts towards the Product Red Promotion.

I would like to dontate even more to the Product RED cause, so I am having my own promotion. I am going to gift up to $25 in apps to readers of my blog. When I purchse and gift one of the following apps 100% of my gift purchase will go to Product RED. Here is what you have to do to be eligible to win one of the Apps for RED apps:

Step 1: Tweet out the following message on Twitter:

Check out @1wayswim, spread the word about Apps for RED & enter to win a gifted Apps for RED app.

Step 2: Fill out a "Contact Me" form at the Contact page of 1wayswim, use the Subject "Apps for RED" and in that form tell me which of the following apps you would like gifted to you if you win:

  • Threes
  • Star Walk
  • Monument Valley

That's it. My contest ends at 9pm eastern time on Monday December 1st. I will randomly select from the entries and gift apps to readers until I have spent $25 (and the proceeds from that $25 in purchases will go to Product RED). There are two reasons I am doing this. One, to spread the word about a really cool promotion Apple is doing along side some really creative work being donated by developers. Two, to give me a fun way to donate a little more Product RED (above and beyond the puchases I listed above). I limited the choice of gifted apps to apps that I own and love, plus they are also relatively close in value to each other.

Good luck!
