Review: Henge Docks Gravitas

While I was at MacWorld a few months ago I spent a few minutes looking around the Henge Docks booth. One of the biggest pain points for me having multiple iOS devices is managing the lightning cables when I want to sync one of my devices with my computer. I have an extra lightning cable, but hunting around for it and then reaching around behind my Mac to plug it is inconvenient (yeah, I'm lazy). So the Gravitas from Henge Docks really caught my eye. The standout feature of this dock is its weight. You wouldn't think that being incredibly heavy would be something to brag about, but in this case it is. Think about it. You go to push your iOS device into the dock and the first thing that happens is that the dock slides away. Not with this dock. They specifically designed this dock to have enough weight to it so that you could dock your device with a single hand. The one thing I asked the Henge Docks people was if the weight of the dock made it expensive to ship. In reality the dock still only weighs 2.5 pounds (1.2 Kg), so shipping costs really aren't a factor (I've bought books heavier than that before). Some of the other great feature about this dock:

  • Made of a zinc alloy 265% denser than aluminum
  • Lightning and 30-pin models available
  • Swappable inserts, allows you to dock iPhone and iPad in the same dock
  • Charge and sync your device in the Gravitas using the included USB cable
  • Audio line out from the back of the dock
  • New inserts will be created for future generations of Apple Lightning equipped devices
  • Despite its impressive weight, the Gravitas only has a 3.5 inch (89 mm) diameter
  • Looks really professional, matches the look and feel of Apple products

I plan to get one of these for my desk...
