App Review Tue: Holiday Sale Apps

It's that time of year again. Apple shuts down some of its services, one of them being the app review and app price change approval process. That means any app tend to go on sale with special holiday pricing and stay there until Apple comes out of the break. This year the holiday freeze on App Store submissions and changes go from December 22nd until December 29th. Christmas is a great time to pick up some really good apps at a reduced price. Here are a few apps that are on sale that I either already have and highly recommend or I am thinking about getting during the sale:

  1. Badland: $0.99 (was $1.99) Badland is a really interesting game with some pretty amazing graphics and game play. Definitely worth a look if you don't already have it.
  2. Paprika: The iPad version of this app is $0.99 (was $4.99) and I think the iPhone and the Mac versions are on sale as well. Paprika is a recipe app that I use heavily. I reviewed this app and I also talked about it on The Mac Power Users Podcast Episode 228.
  3. F-Sim Space Shuttle: $0.99 (was $4.99) This is a great and very realistic Space Shuttle simulation app where you take control of the Shuttle during final approach to the Shuttle Landing Facility (SLF).
  4. Space Age A Cosmic Adventure: $1.99 (was $3.99) This is a retro themed adventure game that I have been eying for a while now. I will probably pick this up and play it over the break.
  5. Bastion: $0.99 (was $4.99) This is a blast to play and I love the professional commentary that you get as you play the game. Very well done!
  6. A Charlie Brown Christmas (Pop-up Book App): $2.99 (was $5.99) This is a great implementation of a holiday classic in book form for your iPhone or iPad. One of my favorite TV shows for the holiday season and the app based book is extremely well done!
  7. Broken Age: $4.99 (was $9.99) This is a really awesome looking adventure game that stars Elijah Wood and just looks visually stunning. The Mac version of the game is also heavily discounted.

Hopefully you all get some time off and get a chance to sit and play and relax during Christmas. If so, pick up one of these great apps and enjoy!

Paprika Recipe Manager

This past couple of years I have been doing a good share of the meal planning, grocery shopping and cooking while my wife was going back to school. During that time I stumbled on an iPad app called Paprika and it has been a life-saver! Since I was ONLY using the app on my iPad I wasn't using nor did I need the syncing option that they offer. Now that my wife is out of school and we are again sharing the cooking duties (ok, maybe she is doing most of it now but I do still do some) it was time for me to buy the Mac and iPhone versions of the app so we can both start taking full advantage of what this app can do. Below are just a few of the killer features of this app:

  • Innovative clipboard tools let you copy and paste recipe information from any website (iPad and Mac versions)
  • Quickly scale recipe ingredients to your desired serving size
  • No-hassle meal planning: add specific recipes or custom entries into the weekly meal planner
  • Powerful search tools help you easily find any recipe by source, ingredient or name
  • Import from popular desktop apps such as MacGourmet, YummySoup! and MasterCook
  • Cloud sync between Mac OS X, iPads, iPhones and iPod Touches
  • Easily manage your grocery list: add recipes with a single click, as well as your own items

The meal planning, advance search by ingredient (which allows you to figure out how to use what you have in the house), grocery shopping list generation and being able import recipes directly from websites with one click of a button are what make this app a must have! Even if the website you are trying to import from isn't directly supported by the one button import feature the app still allows you import the recipe in just a few clicks.

I am posting about this app tonight because Hindsight Labs is running a Thanksgiving sale on all 3 versions of the app.

  • The Mac Version is $9.99 instead of $19.99
  • The iPhone and iPad versions are each $2.99 instead $4.99
